Infonet: New Info To Drive The Internet
.info Coming Soon!

By Michelle Roy

July 2001

Information drives the Internet. The immediate ability to provide access to information is the Internet’s primary use to the average consumer. In an effort to answer the growing demand for an increase variety (and quality) of top-level domains (TLDs) online, The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) recently approved seven additional TLDs.

Many say the most inclusive of these domains is the .info. It is the broadest, most comprehensive new domain being rolled out - - there are no specific registration requirements which means virtually anyone can register a .info.

Just who may want a .info Domain Name? Everyone! Including:

  • businesses
  • individuals
  • public groups
  • brands
  • government agencies
  • facilities
  • and anyone else that any kind of information to provide to the general public

By the end of June or July, the .info domain name will be available for registration. Registration of the .info tld will be divided into three separate phases:

Phase 1: The Sunrise Period
The sunrise period is a 30 day period prior to the opening of public registration. During this first phase, trademark and service mark holders will be able to reserve their exact marks in the .info domain. It is estimated to begin 45-60 days after the final deal with ICANN is signed (should be signed in the middle of May).

Phase 2: Five Rounds
Phase 2 is estimated to begin about 15 days after the completion of Phase 1 and is open to anybody who would like to register a .info domain name. During this phase, registrations will be accepted in 5 rounds, with name selection processing to be performed at the end of each round.

Round 1 will accept applications for 7 days. Round 2 will accept applications for 4 days. Rounds 3, 4, 5, will accept applications for 2 days each. Prior to name selection, the names submitted in that round are randomized, ignoring the order of submission and avoiding preference towards any registrar.

Phase 3: Open Registrations
Phase 3 is estimated to begin about 3 days after the completion of Phase 2, and is open to anybody who would like to register a .info domain. Domains will be registered on a first come first serve basis.

If you have information you want the world to know, stay posted! Expiry.com will keep you updated through our website as to the exact dates each of these three phases will begin. Good luck getting your preferred .info on the infonet!
