Spammers are using my email account - How do I stop them from doing this?
Are there any preventative measures that I can take to stop them using my email account in such a way?
The only way to stop them from doing it again is to not open the door for them to use. In computers, doors are opened with passwords. Passwords should always be 8-10 characters long and be a combination of letters and numbers that do not represent any familiar theme, name, event or word in the dictionary. Passwords like 12345 or abcde are just begging to be abused. Never use a password that might be guessed by anyone but you.
Brute force password attacks are being launched against our servers all the time trying every door, every account and every possible password on every door. You would not believe it unless you saw it like we do. All day - every day - 24 hours a day - hackers are trying our defences so that they can own a client's account or our server. They are looking for a free ride.
Another thing they use if they can't break the password is they find exploitable forms that email results. These forms can be used for spam if you have an old version of a popular form script with well documented exploits that make it easy for them to turn an innocent form into a mass mailing weapon of the SPAMMERS. The easiest way to prevent this is to remove all forms from your site and simply ask visitors to email their questions directly to you.
